On June 19 Nicki successfully defended her PhD thesis: "Subcellular Distribution of Apoptosis Associated Speck-like Protein Mediates Inflammasome Assembly: A Novel Mechanism in the Regulation of Interleukin-1beta Release." and returned to Medical School to finish her last 2 years of the MD/PhD program - Congratulations and Good Luck!
We just received 2 NIH ARRA administrative supplements - one for a student position and one to upgrade our Nikon fluorescence microscope with a motorized stage, the perfect focus system and a stage top incubation system from Tokai Hit, which provides high resolution live cell imaging capabilities directly in our lab.
Andrea just won a 3 year ARRA NIH R03 award from NIAMS: "Molecular mechanisms of cytoskeletal rearrangement in Rheumatoid Arthritis." - congratulations!
We just received a 2 year ARRA NIH R01 competitive revision application to generate a novel conditional knock-out mouse model to study inflammatory host responses.
Bita Cyrus, a first year DGP student joined the lab for a 10 week fall rotation - welcome
A position is available immediately for a motivated individual to join the laboratory as a research assistant to maintain a colony of transgenic and knock-out mice to evaluate inflammatory disease responses in vivo. Prior experience with mice is required. More detailes can be found at www.northwester.edu/hr/jobs/

Anu and Lan joined the lab for their thesis and are part of Northwestern's DGP;
Anu just passed her qualifying exam this month;
Sonal was promoted to Research Assistant Professor and had a presentation at the Keystone Conference on Molecular Cell Biology of Macrophages in Human Diseases;
Lucia was awarded an NIH T32 fellowship;
Our Nature Immunology paper on POP3 made the cover of the April issue and Stephanie Eisenbarth wrote a very nice Commentary about our work and several press articles reported on our finding;
We received 2 NIH R01 and an AHA grant to continue our inflammation and autoimmune research;
Christian has been promoted to Associate Professor and awarded tenure at Northwestern
much happened again during the past year:
Lucia's POP1 paper has been just published in Immunity - Congratulations! It was featured on the Immunity home page and was accompanied by a commentary from Moshe Arditi and colleagues: POPsicle for Fever! Cooling Down the Inflammasome
It was also featured in the Rheumatologist
Mohana joined us for her postdoc after receiving outstanding training from Rance Berg at the University of North Texas Health Science Center and was awarded a fellowship from the AHA on her 1st submission;
Lan also received a predoctoral fellowship from the AHA;
